SAP Evaluations

SAP evaluation is an evaluation with a DOT-qualified professional determining the severity of a safety-sensitive employee’s alcohol and/or drug misuse. After the evaluation, the SAP recommends a plan which could include treatment and educational programs. An SAP will assist the employee with referrals to the appropriate treatment facilities or educational programs. If the employee has shown compliance, the SAP will perform a follow-up evaluation and can recommend that they submit to a return to duty drug and/or alcohol test.

The SAP will submit two reports to your employer with their findings and recommendations in the first report and a follow-up compliance report with return-to-duty recommendations.

The SAP function is to protect the public interest in safety by professionally evaluating the employee and recommending appropriate education and/or treatment, follow-up testing, and aftercare. The primary safety objective of the DOT rules is to prevent (through deterrence and detection) alcohol and controlled substance users from performing transportation industry safety-sensitive functions. A transportation worker who has violated DOT regulations (DOT Regulations, 49 CFR Part 40) must follow a specific procedure before being considered for return to safety-sensitive function.
